HP Graphing Calculator: Model 50G
![]() |
Overview
The HP 50G Graphing Calculator launched in 2007, is the successor the the 49G+ graphic calculator.
This is the latest model in the HP 49 series of graphic calculators and features quite a few changes over the 49G+ mostly in terms of external appearance and ergonomics and a few in terms of functionality, memory and connectivity.
Features
Although the 49G+ was a fully featured graphic calculator, one of the biggest problems that plagued it was the keyboard. The keys did not have that reassuring tactile feedback that was there in earlier HP calculators.
The 50G has solved the problem to quite an extent with a keyboard that is firm and responsive.
The 9 lines by 33 characters (131 *80 pixels) LCD screen with adjustable contrast offers 30% more display than the earlier 49G+. It can clearly display 3D-graphs, 2D & 3D plots and other graphing functions in-built into the calculator.
As is the case with all calculators in the 49 series, this calculator fully supports RPN. It also supports textbook and algebraic modes of input. Most advanced users will agree that RPN may take a little while to get used to, but it pays in the long run. If you are a beginner than you can always use the algebraic or textbook modes, although practicing RPN is highly recommended.
This is a powerful calculator that supports over 2300 hundred different functions for statistical, algebra, probability and financial calculations. It also includes an equation library that was a feature removed in some of the models in the 49 series.
The calculator provides 2.5 MB of memory (512 MB RAM and 2 MB ROM).
Summary
This calculator has a dark black color with keys in orange, red and white. The keyboard is vastly improved over that of the 49g+. Some users have observed that there are very few differences between the 49G+ and the 50G. They feel that the 50G is what the 49G+ should have been.
The manuals that is supplied with the box, leaves much to be desired. It would be nice to see HP improving upon the documentation, but thankfully there are a number of tutorials, documents and applications that are available online.
Summarizing we can say that the 50G is a powerful calculator with a lot of storage space. It features connectivity based on a serial port, USB and an IrDA port. Most of the issues that had plagued the 49G+ have been removed. The SD card that can be used to store applications or can be emulated as ROM is a great touch.
